O salutaris

I wrote this piece in 1995 for the adult choir of the Notre-Dame’s choir school. It was first performed at the cathedral under the baton of my great friend Denis Rouger.

The lyrics of this motet come from the last two verses of the Latin hymn Verbum supernum written by St Thomas Aquinas in the 13th century.

As a “Blessed sacrament motet”, this text is traditionally sung in the catholic liturgy during the Communion rite.

This piece is meant to be performed by an a cappella choir, but can also be sung by 4 soloists if there is a great homogeneity of voices. The tempo shall be adapted accordingly to the vocal forces.
